I’ve been posting these RBMA videos on my blog.

Episode 2 of the Hashtag series got to me. That music has been me for the past 2 years. Soundcloud and the Boiler Room have been my haven. I know I’m definitely not alone. So I decided to go personal for a second and outline my journey into that wonderful world of bass music.

I use bass music because it’s a simplified term and I will not use “post dubstep”. Besides being horrifying to even say, its more to describe a time period, not a sound.

I remember when my world of music started changing. Back in the days of my youth [shut up, im not that old], I was a huge house head. Anything with that funk/groove 4x4 beat that I could dance to without a dude, is what I wanted to hear. Diva vocals as well, because of my strong love for rnb. Then I aged a bit and I moved on to live shows. Hip hop and indie bands. I had a blast and this phase lasted a long time. The dubstep movement came and hit Austin earlier than you think thanks to the Weight crew. Then Mad Classy. Then it bro’d out. And frankly got really harsh for my ear holes. Then 2 years ago I met someone who shined a light on this musical treasure box. Abjekt, who grew up with a strong affliction for garage and dubstep from the early nights at FWD. We began an online correspondence of life stories and links to music we were listening to. The first thing he ever sent me was this track below and that was it for me.

Even though I have many moons of hate for Drake, this edit/remix played over and over for the next year. I had love for garage from the 2step days of Artful Dodger and Craig David, but it never really garnered a lot of attention where I was. I really didn’t even know what this type of music was called. But that didn’t matter. It never really does until you need to tell someone else to check it out. But those who know me, know I have really good taste, so I don’t need to explain SHIT. Right?! #jokes

Then it led to Dark Sky videos, Jaime XX and Gil Scott Heron, FMF, Mount Kimbie, and even Ms Dynamite. He also sent me the Jaime XX remix of Adele’s Rolling in The Deep from his Boiler Room set. Thus Boiler Room had met my heart.

February 2011 I made the trip to London and got to experience my first ever Boiler Room. It was #45 and Oneman played /killed it. Absolutely became one of my favorite Djs. The vibe was small and while reeking of hipsterdom, the foundation of really good music was there. That was all I cared about.

That March. SXSW 2011. I dove in hard. Most of my close friends still weren’t really into what I was listening to. Regardless of how hard I pushed for them to listen [assholes] [jkjkjk] But that was the year of Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Deadboy and Jaime XX at Dub Academy. I spent a large amount of time going off on my own because I had to see these Djs/producers. I love hanging with my friends, but this shit was SERIOUS as there wasn’t a lot of gigs for these guys that year. Well worth it.

A year later and many downloaded sets from the above came March and sxsw 2012. Another year towards powering these amazing producers/DJs and bringing them to Austin. The Boiler Room crew was even making it across the ocean for a couple of shows/events. They had an amazing line up at a house on East 8th that pretty much made my sxsw. Oneman, Jackmaster, Nick Hook, Brenmar, Lunice, Machine Drum. and Jacques Greene. I made my friend walk all the way from dirty 6th street to this house with a 6 pack of tallboys in hand. It doesn’t sound that far, BUT IT WAS. And in hind sight we should have taken a cab or go the beer closer to the house. But whatever! This was about to be my JAM and I didn’t currr. The best vibes of sxsw 2012.

Almost another year later, and I have found my home in music. A place where I can always dance and where it always evokes something inside of myself. Where I can actually feel the music, sans drugs, and revel in the ideas of the melodies.

I have to say that being in London now and knowing there will not be a sxsw 2013 for me bums me out. But the past 2 sx’s were some of the most amazing times of my life. That’s an exaggeration really. I remember being uber drunk and dropping my iphone and shattering the glass on the front. That is definitely NOT the one. But music wise, they are the top 2 sxsw’s of my life. But I’m also in London. Home to many of my favorites and where amazing line ups constantly happen.

So no sx tears for me booboo.

Just dance.

Can I just say that Marnie reminds me of Lauren with that dance face?

It’s the BEST and can’t wait to see that face soon!!

Also on the sx tip. Friends and free drinks are nice but if there is someone you are dying to see, fuck your friends, go see them. You won’t regret it. Also, SXSW needs to start paying attention to grime.

I’ve made it to London.

It’s weird feeling like I don’t belong somewhere for the first time in my life. Not a bad feeling, just new.

Trying to get adjusted but I’m still sleeping until the afternoon and am having some issues getting my finances sorted. Pain in the ass, to be honest.

Luckily, I have really good support.

Also, it’s been so easy [on paper] at this point, I was bound to run into issues somewhere. And it hasn’t even been a full week.

Miss everyone back home like crazy. Don’t really miss Austin. Just my peeps.

They the type of people who made the club get crunk. #neverforget

I’m starting to keep a daily task journal. Not like a diary, just little notes reminding me of what I did that day. Planning for next month! Should be great. We’ll see how long I last with that.
